I began working with Cyclabilities at the beginning of 2017. I have been incredibly impressed with the collaboration between team members which has ensured a true blending of knowledge across multi disciplines and many years of experience working with children with additional needs. This collaborative approach and a commitment to constant program improvement has meant that each week participants are involved in a highly professional, individualised and dynamic learning experience. We have seen measurable progress for participants in our two key learning areas: bike riding and road safety, as well as our complimentary learning areas: working as a team; listening to and following verbal and written instructions; observing social norms. This progress has been measured across a range of different participants with a wide range of additional needs and aged from 3 to 11 years old.
In addition, Cyclabilities fosters family and friendship connection. The program incorporates opportunities for families to bond and spend time together. It also encourages friendship between participants and their families, helping to reduce the social isolation that often accompanies families that have children with additional needs.
As the participants gain bike riding skills and the knowledge to be able to be around roads safely, the families report back to us that they have a greater freedom to become active participants in their communities.
